Australian almonds continue to be in strong demand around the world.
The industry’s August Position report – which is sixth month of the selling year – has been one of the strongest in history according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). While the export figures can be amended in the months ahead, due to variations in the reporting protocols within the ABS, the August almond shipments were the highest on record, bettering the previous watermark month of September, 2024.
The big movers in August were Indian buyers with volumes up almost 500% from August 2025 shipments and now 17% up season to date on the previous season. The key factor in this increase has been the uptake of kernel, up to almost 4500 tonnes from 680 tonnes last year. For the first time, the Indian market has emerged as a value-added buyer for lower grades of kernel as processors and manufacturers embrace the versatility of almonds. This is largely due to the price advantage delivered by the 50% reduction in tariffs available via the AI-ECTA bi-lateral trade agreement signed several years ago.
It has been a season for low grade kernel and strong interest from Turkiye has emerged again. Exports to Turkish buyers were 400% more in August (2631mt) compared to the same month a year ago (503mt).
The Almond Board of Australian will publish its 2026-27 actual crop intake later this month.
