    Riverina Regional Meeting

    The industry’s latest spatial mapping results will be unveiled to Riverina almond growers at the ABA’s regional meeting on June 4 from 3-5pm at The Southside, Griffith Leagues Club.

    The meeting will also serve as a grower check in on the impact of fuel and fertiliser availability.

    The aim of the regional meetings is to connect with growers and local stakeholders in an open, discussion-based setting.

    These meetings provide a platform to share updates on almond production, plantings, market trends, chemical regulations and to highlight current research, development and extension activities funded through the R&D levy.

    They also support collaboration and information exchange between ABA staff, growers, processors, researchers and service providers, while offering an opportunity to collect feedback and discuss industry issues relevant to each region.

    Riverland Regional Meeting

    Riverland growers are invited to help shape the Australian almond industry’s strategic focus at the ABA’s regional meeting on November 25 from 11am until 2pm at the Almond Centre of Excellence.

    Currently the top four national issues include carpophilus beetle damage, crop damage due to on farm storage, beehive availability and pricing, as well as Monterey leafing failure.

    The aim of the regional meetings is to connect with growers and local stakeholders in an open, discussion-based setting.

    These meetings provide a platform to share updates on almond production, plantings, market trends, chemical regulations and to highlight current research, development and extension activities funded through the R&D levy.

    They also support collaboration and information exchange between ABA staff, growers, processors, researchers and service providers, while offering an opportunity to collect feedback and discuss industry issues relevant to each region.

    Sunraysia Regional Meeting

    Tackling issues that are impacting yields like Carpophilus beetle will be the headline topic at the annual Almond Board of Australia’s Sunrayisa grower meeting at the Mildura Sporting Precinct on September 10 from 11am until 2:30pm.

    Varietal flowering issues during 2024 webinar

    Join ABA staff, Californian plant breeder John Slaughter and nurseryman Johnathon Moss to discuss the flowering issue experienced with Shasta during pollination in 2024.

    John will share his observations following his visits to Australian orchards in October.

    Intensification in almonds: project update and field walk

    The field walk at Select Harvest’s Carina orchard (4830A Hattah – Robinvale Road Bannerton, Victoria) will showcase a successful high-density demonstration plot, offering participants a practical example of effective scion-rootstock combinations.

    Participants can learn how different genotypes perform under similar conditions, providing insights into their suitability for high-density systems.

    In addition, this will be an opportunity to network with the researchers who will share data and information collected from the trial, providing insights into tree water usage, the link between irrigation and canopy light interception, and tree performance.

    Overall, the walk will offer a valuable opportunity to understand the complexities of high-density almond production and its potential implications for the Australian almond industry.

    Riverland regional meeting

    The ABA’s Riverland Regional Meeting will feature a comprehensive industry update, insights into our extension program and an overview of current and upcoming R&D projects.

    Attendees will gain valuable insights on research projects like the IDM program and the new self-fertile variety evaluations.

    Additionally, there will be discussions on significant topics such as Monterey Decline and Carpophilus beetle.

    Monterey workshop

    The Almond Board of Australia invites you to join Josh Fielke (ABA industry development officer) and Len Tesoriero (NSW DPI) to participate in a workshop focusing on the path forward with Monterey leafing failure.

    The half day session will be held in Griffith on August 14 from 8:30am. 

    During the session we will: 

    1) Review the actions we have taken so far.

    2) Look at the pathological results Len has collected.

    3) Discuss the farm management practices and conditions that look to be creating the issue using information collected so far through the survey.

    4) Create methodologies for growers to participate in monitoring and report progress of interventions made.

    Sunraysia regional grower meeting

    All the key industry issues like carpophilus beetle, Monterey leafing failure, water buybacks, varroa mite regulations and an update on the global market will be a feature of the ABA’s annual Sunraysia grower forum.

    Growers are invited to attend this informal session on July 31 at the Agriculture Victoria Offices on the corner of Koorlong Ave and Eleventh St in Irymple to discuss industry issues with the Almond Board’s CEO Tim Jackson and Industry Development Manager Deidre Jaensch.

    A BBQ lunch will be served at 12:30pm, with the forum to run from 1-3:30pm.

    Riverina regional meeting

    Emergency Use Permit online meeting

    The Almond Board of Australia and Syngenta will hold an online meeting on Friday 15 December from 11am to midday (SA time) to discuss the Emergency Use Permit for Metalaxyl, granted by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) on November 30, 2023.

    Whole orchard recycling and replant considerations

    Brent Holtz from University of California Cooperative Extension in San Joaquin County will visit Australia in January to share his knowledge about Whole Orchard Recycling (WOR). California has been trialing WOR for more than 20 years and has been able to demonstrate improved yield, soil health and moisture retention benefits.

    Hort Innovation project AL21000 is examining whether the same WOR benefits seen in California are able to be achieved in Australia.

    Replanting is on the minds of many growers, because as 40% of Australian plantings are more than 20 years old.
